The Mental Health and Addictions Research Group of the IDIBGI is made up of a team of multidisciplinary professionals from the Mental Health and Addictions Network of the Healthcare Institute de Girona, recognized for the “development of a model of community care in mental health and addictions that has closed the psychiatric hospital” (Premi Experiències. Jornada 25 Anys al Servei del Sistema Nacional de Salut de Catalunya: Mirem cap al Futur, 2016).

Main lines of research
  • Omics and functionalism. Impact of pharmacogenetics and the microbiota on the diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and prediction of mental disorders and addictions. Study of the relationship between functionalism and the effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, as well as their impact on genetics.
  • Cognition, neurocognition, communication, trauma and attachment, impact on the diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and prediction of mental disorders and addictions.
  • Personality. Diagnosis and analysis of differential personality patterns and their effectiveness and predictive capacity in different types of intervention.
  • Non-pharmacological interventions. Effectiveness of various psychological interventions, physical exercise, music therapy, and dance therapy in improving symptoms in various mental disorders and addictions.
  • Validation of psychometric tools.
  • Mental health and gender, and perinatal mental health.
  • Educational and employment inclusion and mental health. Research based on tools to improve the empowerment of people affected by mental illness in managing their condition and reintegrating into the educational and employment sectors.
  • Epidemiology of mental disorders and addictions.
  • Health services research. Evaluation of mental health programs and support for decision-making for those responsible for planning mental health care.
  • Gamification, virtual reality, and Artificial Intelligence. Effectiveness of technology in the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prediction of mental illnesses.
  • Patient safety. How to implement diagnostic, treatment, monitoring, and predictive tools to reduce adverse events caused by their application in clinical settings.
Strategic objectives
  • To carry out research enabling increased knowledge of mental disorders, improving their treatment and recovery, personal empowerment and the quality of care of people with mental health problems.
  • To promote participation in research from professionals from the Mental Health and Addictions Network, increasing the critical mass of full time researchers.
  • To establish alliances to carry out joint research projects with other research groups from the IDIBGI.
  • To encourage participation from researchers from the research group in multicentre projects, allowing alliances with other research centres to be strengthened.
